Darth Vader, also referred to as Lord Vader and once known as Anakin Skywalker, is the main antagonist of the Star Wars: The Force Unleashed series.

Second only to the Emperor, Lord Darth Vader is the Supreme Commander of the Imperial Forces and a Dark Lord of the Sith. Dressed in black from head to toe and wielding a crimson-bladed lightsaber, he is the military leader of the Galactic Empire and the symbol of what it stands for: rule through tyranny and military might.

An overly capable strategist and cunning puppeteer as well as an unparalleled warrior, the Sith Lord leads the hunt for the last of the Jedi Order and the cracking down of the Rebellion. Behind closed doors, Darth Vader also plots the downfall of his master, Darth Sidious, to ensure his own ascension as Emperor. To achieve his ambitions, the Dark Lord trains a Secret Apprentice in the arts of the Dark Side and Lightsaber Combat to harry his enemies, rein in the Rebels into his trap and potentially help him overthrow his own master.

    History[]

    Background[]

Born as Anakin Skywalker, he is presumed to have been born on the desert world of Tatooine. Even in his younger years, Anakin was adventurous and kind-hearted, leading him to be taken under the wing of the legendary Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi, following him on an "ideliastic crusade". Chosen as a Jedi Knight of the Jedi Order, General Anakin Skywalker fought as a commander of the Republic's Grand Army against the Separatist Alliance's droid forces, proving his valour and ingenuity throughout the Clone Wars.

Seduced by lies and promises, Anakin was tempted to the Dark Side by a hidden Sith Lord, Darth Sidious, and was anointed Darth Vader. A duel between him and his former master, Kenobi, resulted in him being badly injured, forcing him to live out the rest of his miserable existence with the help of a cybernetic suit and breathing mask. Reduced to a terrifying black caped-figure, "more machine than man", Darth Vader was the personification of the Republic's transformation into the Empire. Embracing his new self, he devoted himself to imposing order, regardless of the costs of victory. Granted the honorific of Supreme Commander, Lord Vader was placed in charge of the vast Imperial Military and answered solely to the Emperor.

Throughout the "dark times", the Emperor's lieutenant directed the Imperial forces' efforts to eradicate surviving Jedi Knights, wipe out the Separatist holdouts and quell any insurrection. Despite his special position in the hierarchy, his lack of background had led to a number of theories surrounding his past, ranging from supposed origins as an experimental cyborg warrior in similar vein to the late General Grievous, or claims of him being an old disciple of Count Dooku.

Though professing loyalty to his master, Darth Vader plotted to overthrow Darth Sidious and claim his mantle for himself. To achieve this, the Dark Lord sought a being powerful in the Force to mold into his own secret apprentice, one who would both help him become Emperor and rid him of the growing rebellion once and for all.

    Finding a Secret Apprenticce[]

In 18 BBY, the Emperor's spies located Jedi Knight Kento Marek on the planet Kashyyyk, which was under attack by Imperial forces. Hoping to solve both matters simultaneously, Lord Vader was dispatched to lead the ground assault and eliminate the rogue Jedi. Upon descending, the cyborg warlord was greeted by a nervous commander, whom he cut short with a light Force-choke, having no interest in the man's excuses.

Reinforced from behind by advancing Stormtroopers, Darth Vader mercilessly slashed his way through parties of Wookiee warriors. Reaching a large hut, he was met by his quarry, Kento, whom he engaged in a fierce duel. Superior in strength, the Sith Lord easily won and Force-pushed the Jedi into the Wookiee hut. As he was about to deliver the killing blow, Vader sensed a powerful presence nearby, which was revealed to be Kento's son, Galen. The young boy used the Force to snatch the Dark Lord's lightsaber, though the latter killed his desperate father all the same by breaking his neck. Seeing his potential, Vader cut down his own men to prevent them from shooting his prize, and took Galen for his own. Teaching the boy the ways of the dark side, Vader soon shared his plans with Galen: to wrestle the reins of the Empire from Sidious with the aid of his own Sith disciple, Galen.

At some point, Darth Sidious became aware of Darth Vader's training of Galen Marek, but was persuaded to indulge him; the Supreme Commander convinced the Emperor that the young man could be of use in dealing with the leaders of major rebel cells.

For many years, Darth Vader continued with his official duties as Supreme Commander, hunting the last of the Jedi Order and stomping rebellion in the Outer Rim. It was during the Battle of Callos that the talented Juno Eclipse came to his attention. Though he had noted her genuine allegiance, the Dark Lord deemed that the captain lacked the ruthlessness needed to command his personal fighter wing, the Black Eight Squadron. Lord Vader also had the Empirical, a science vessel, at his disposal and used it for various programs, studies and experiments; he also notably loaned it to Lieutenant Rom Mohc for the Dark Trooper Phase Zero project. Rumors abounded that the Supreme Commander had an entire fleet of such starships under his command.

At the same time aboard the Executor - his Executor-class Super Star Destroyer flagship which underwent construction - Vader also oversaw the training of Galen Marek - codenamed "Starkiller". Eventually, the Sith Lord put his promising pupil to the test by having him assassinate key rebel rabble-rousers, surviving Jedi and dissident Imperials; Vader also programmed the holodroid PROXY to try and kill Starkiller, to further intensify the young Sith's combat techniques. To further aid Starkiller, Vader secretly attached Eclipse to the Rogue Shadow starship as its pilot.

    Starkiller's Missions[]

When he deemed Starkiller's studies to be complete, Darth Vader "knighted" him his Sith apprentice and gave him his first major target: Rahm Kota, the veteran Jedi General of an rebel cell that was interferring in the Empire's affairs on Nar Shaddaa. To maintain secrecy, the Dark Lord instructed his disciple to kill anyone he encountered, be they the Jedi Master's forces or their own Imperial troops.

After Starkiller's apparent success, Vader dispatched him to eliminate Kazdan Paratus, another Jedi survivor who had concealed himself on the junk world of Raxus Prime. Once more, the apprentice returned victorious and eager help his master turn on the Emperor. But Vader was not convinced that the defeats of Kota and Paratus were sufficient to prove one's worth and so he gave Starkiller one final target: Shaak Ti, a Jedi Master who had once sat on the Jedi Council and had now taken refuge on the jungle planet of Felucia.

    Starkiller's Puppeteer[]

Upon Starkiller's return to the Executor, Vader awaited on the bridge, watching the assembly of Sidious' fleet through the viewing screen. When the apprentice eagerly asked whether his master had lured the Emperor to them, the cyborg warlord rebuked the notion. Just as his own master entered the bridge, Vader stabbed Starkiller and then two-facedly kneeled before Sidious. The Emperor feigned anger at the Supreme Commander, accusing him of forgetting his place - that of pupil, not master. Sidious further insinuated Vader had betrayed him by taking Starkiller as an apprentice and ordered him to kill him, to prove his loyalty. Paying no heed to the wounded young man's words, the Dark Lord used to Force to slam him into the walls and then out the window of the viewing screen. Pleased, Sidious left Vader to his devices.

Taking the barely-living Starkiller to the Empirical, Vader had him cared for by medical droids. Upon his disgruntled apprentice's awakening, the Dark Lord claimed to have done what he had done in an effort to deceive his own master and reiterated that their goals were stil the same. Stating that Sidious' spies would be watching their every movement now, Vader tasked Starkiller with fomenting unrest to distract the agents by rallying major insurgents. Unknown to the trusting young man, the Supreme Commander intended to merely use him as a tool to gather all the rebel leaders into one place and capture them.

After the Senators Bail Organa, Garm Bel Iblis and Mon Mothma together with Jedi General Rahm Kota assembled on Corellia, Supreme Commander Darth Vader himself arrived, leading his 501st Legion in apprehending the Rebel leaders. Mockingly congratulating his apprentice, the Dark Lord Force-pushed him out of his way. Starkiller now understood that Vader had merely used him as pawn to hunt down his enemies; Vader further affirmed that he still intended to supplant Sidious, just not with Starkiller by his side. Before he could deal the killing blow, an apparition of Obi-Wan Kenobi intervened. Though Vader dispatched the apparition, revealed to be PROXY, Starkiller escaped him.

    The Dark Lord comes forth[]

After the ambush on Corellia, Lord Vader took the captive Senators Organa, Mothma and Iblis together with General Kota to the Emperor's throne room aboard the Death Star battlestation. The two Sith Lords planned to interrogate and then execute the four insurgent leaders, in order to set an example to anyone bold enough to defy the Empire. Much to their chagrin, Galen - now Starkiller no more - infiltrated the Death Star to rescue the Rebels, prompting Vader to confrot him at Sidious' behest.

As Galen approached Sidious' throne room, Vader appeared and the two titanic Force-wielders engaged one another in a fierce duel between former mentor and pupil. Though undeniably strong in the dark side, the Dark Lord was terribly maimed by his old apprentice in the fight, with his mask and parts of his armor and chestbox shattered. Having bested Vader in combat, Galen chose to spare him and pressed on to liberate his allies from Sidious' clutches. The redeemed apprentice's sacrifice in the clash with the Emperor bought the Rebel leaders enough time to flee the incoming Stormtroopers and live to fight another day. Minutes after their escale, the weakened Vader stood over the lifeless body of Galen, seemingly saddened or dumbfounded by the outcome of the short skirmish, before being joined by Sidious. The two Sith Lords notes that their former pawn's selfless act would only serve to inspire their enemies and could foreshadow the Empire's fall. The Supreme Commander stressed to the Emperor that, as the latter had always intended, he would continue to hunt down the Rebel leaders throughout the galaxy.

    Powers and abilities[]

Vader was a brilliant strategist and was still, despite his weakened powers, one of the greatest pilots in the galaxy. His armor did not dull the precognition ability he possessed since childhood and he was able to predict the movements of his targets during dogfights with pinpoint precision. He still possessed his former persona's amazing engineering skills, having personally overseen the design of both his TIE Advanced x1 fighter and the second Death Star's construction. His skill with the lightsaber, developed during the many battles and skirmishes of the Clone Wars and the Great Jedi Purge, was legendary and was even further honed through the Jedi that he dueled following the Purge. All of these abilities, however, were secondary to his incredible mastery of the Force.

Because his limbs were severed and his body severely burned on Mustafar he lost much of his Force potential. As Darth Vader, Anakin Skywalker was believed to have had roughly eight-tenths of the strength of Darth Sidious. But even still, Vader wielded tremendous power and skill. Had he sustained none of his injuries on Mustafar, he would have most likely been twice as powerful as Sidious and four times more powerful than even Galen Marek. In fact, it is estimated that if he was as strong as he was when he purged the Jedi Temple when facing Galen Marek, he would have easily outmatched and killed him. He can use various abilites such as Force Push, Force Repulse, Force Grapple, which he can do to multiple objects at once, and his deadly Force Choke, which he mastered more than any other Sith Lords before him. Though Darth Vader is skilled in the use of the force, he is unable to use Force Lightning due to the armor he wears and his prosphetic limbs.

Sidious, having gone out of his way to keep Vader alive, took an alternative viewpoint. Though it was true to say that he had not bargained for an apprentice that was "more machine than man", Sidious was of the opinion that most of the limitations on Vader's potential power were not physical but psychological. He believed that, were Vader to fully confront his choices and disappointments to completely shake himself out of his despair, he would have been able to reawaken the incredible power within him. Yet, while the Dark Lord made progress in this regard, he was never fully able to accept who, and what, he had become.
